LOUISVILLE, KY -- A pair of second half goals propelled the No. 1 University of Maryland to a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Old Dominion University in the opening match of the 2005 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship Friday at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1 early in the second frame, UM sophomore Janneke van Leeuwen cashed in on a penalty corner off an assist from senior Paula Infante at the 26:22 mark of the second half to stake the Terrapins to a 2-1 lead.

Several minutes later, Maryland senior Jackie Ciconte gathered a rebound off a shot by van Leeuwan and netted a crucial insurance goal with 7:11 remaining to extend the Terrapin advantage to 3-1.

Old Dominion (19-6) continued to battle and with 5:51 to go, senior Janelle Engle rebounded her own shot and fired a bullet to the cage Maryland keeper Kathryn Masson to pull the Monarchs to within 3-2. However, Maryland (22-2) controlled play over the remainder of the half to collect the victory.

The Terrapins took control at the outset and dictated the tempo throughout the first half. Less than five minutes into the match, Infante, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, took the ball virtually untouched from midfield and beat Monarch keeper Mary Cate Gordon from 10 yards away at the 4:08 mark to put UM ahead 1-0. The Terrapins had five penalty corners in the opening frame.

Maryland took the lead to halftime, but ODU responded early in the second half. Senior Darcy Pinchbeck collected a rebound off a shot by Engle on a penalty corner try with 33:49 to go to knot the score at 1-1 just out of the break.

The Terrapins outshot the Monarchs 17-6 in the match. Maryland advances to the Championship match at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, November 20 in Trager Stadium.
