Lynchburg beats another top-five foe
Leonard tallies three goals as Hornets take down No. 2 Diplomats
WINCHESTER, Va. -– Reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week Lindsay Leonard scored three times on Tuesday as fourth-ranked Lynchburg defeated second-ranked Franklin & Marshall 5-0 in non-conference play.
Franklin & Marshall (11-1) is the second top-five ranked opponent that Lynchburg has defeated this season. The Hornets took down then-No. 1 Messiah College 2-1 on Sept. 13.
The teams played a scoreless first half with Lynchburg outshooting the Diplomats 7-4. Franklin & Marshall goalie Avery Koep made two saves in the half to keep the game even at 0-0.
Leonard broke the scoreless tie at 55:01 with a goal from freshman Katie Kline before adding another goal at 56:19 to give LC a 2-0 lead.
Kline added a tally herself at 56:54 off an assist from senior Deanna Smith before Leonard scored her third goal of the evening at 62:49 to make it 4-0. Sophomore Nicole Marburger capped the night with a goal from Leonard at the 66:54 mark to give Lynchburg a 5-0 final during the second-ranked Diplomats.
Senior goalie Tiffany Frye made four saves in the game, with all of them coming in the second half. Lynchburg outshot Franklin & Marshall 14-11 in the game.
Lynchburg (12-1, 4-0 ODAC) continues to have the top offense in NCAA Division III, averaging more than 5.5 goals and 14.3 points per game.
