UNC leads championship field

Old Dominion, Syracuse, Connecticut also earn top seeds

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee announced Tuesday the field of 16 teams for the 2011 Championship. Five conferences were awarded automatic qualification while six conferences competed for three play-in berths. The remaining eight teams were selected at large.

The following conferences and their representatives received automatic qualification:

The teams winning the play-in berths were Ohio from the Mid-American Conference, Princeton from the Ivy League and Richmond from the Atlantic 10.

The remaining eight teams that were selected at large included: Connecticut, Duke, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Northeastern, Ohio State and Stanford.

The first- and second-round games will be played on four campus sites Nov. 12-13. Louisville will host the semifinals and final on Friday, Nov. 18, and Sunday, Nov. 20, at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. The semifinals and final will be streamed live on NCAA.com. In 2010, Maryland claimed its seventh Division I title with a 3-2 double overtime victory against North Carolina.
