EWING, N.J. -- Third-ranked College of New Jersey slipped past No. 13 William Smith 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship on Saturday. The Lions improve to 21-2 and advance to Sunday's quarterfinals, while the Herons end the season with a 16-5 record.

William Smith actually put more shots on goal than TCNJ, but Lions' goalie Shannon Syciarz stopped all six shots she face for her ninth shutout of the season.

New Jersey set the tempo in the first half, outshooting the Herons 8-3, but first-year goalie Catherine Hare stopped both shots she faced to keep the match scoreless.

The Lions netted the only goal of the match in the fifth minute when Caitlyn Jenkins one-timed a centering pass from Christy Wham. It was her 15th goal of the season.

Hare finished the day with three saves and got an assist from junior Sara Helmer's defensive save in the 37th minute.

William Smith's best scoring chances were thwarted by the Lions' Lauren Pigott, who recorded defensive saves in the 41st and 57th minutes.

The Herons end their 27th consecutive winning season with its best record since going 16-5 in 2007.
