Lynchburg rolls past Catholic

Frye makes six saves as Hornets advance to quarterfinals

EWING, N.J. — There are only eight teams left in the 2011 NCAA Division III field hockey tournament, and third-ranked Lynchburg is one of them. The Hornets defeated Catholic 2-0 in the second round of the tournament Saturday, hosted by TCNJ.

Senior Tarah Rahner poked in a loose ball in front of the net exactly 18 minutes into the game and LC took the 1-0 lead into intermission. LC outshot the Cardinals 7-3 in the first 35 minutes and each team was awarded two penalty corners.

Following a penalty corner, sophomore attack Kelli Williams found the back of the cage from junior Shelly Milks at 46:15. The LC defense and senior goalie Tiffany Frye withstood a Cardinal flurry in the second half to hold onto the shutout. CU outshot LC in the second half 10-3 and had 10 corners to LC’s five after intermission. For the game, Catholic outshot LC 13-10 and held an advantage of 12-7 in penalty corners.

Frye made six saves for Lynchburg (19-1) and Megan Comunale notched six saves for Catholic (17-2). Sophomore Melanie Tenney made a defensive save.

The Hornets face TCNJ Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in the third round. The winner advances to the national semifinals next weekend in Lowell, Mass.
