NORFOLK, Va. — Emma Batten scored two goals and Kathryn Kirk assisted on two to help lead second-ranked Old Dominion (21-2) to a 5-0 victory against Ohio State in first-round NCAA tournament action on Saturday afternoon at ODU’s Powhatan Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs advance to meet Duke on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in a second-round match.
“Our defense really has been a key for us. We attack from our defense. Everybody understands their roles and responsiblities. They don’t alway’s do it pretty, but they do it hard. The only thing I want at the end of the season is for the kids to walk off the field, knowing they played hard. The final score is not always the prize,” Old Dominion head coach Beth Anders said.
Two minutes into the match, Kati Nearhouse gave ODU a 1-0 lead off a corner with the assists from Stephanie Kratzer and Kelsey Smither.
Rebecca Condie put the Lady Monarchs up 2-0 off a rebound shot, then Batten added her 26th and 27th goals of the season tallying one late in the first half and at the other at the beginning of the second half. Lydia Velzian wrapped up the scoring on the day by scoring Old Dominion’s fifth goal in the second half.
ODU keeper Devon Siefert picked up her eighth shutout of the season as she made four saves on the afternoon.
“We play a very hard schedule and we’ve developed confidence from playing such a strong and difficult schedule,” Anders added.
ODU and Duke played twice during the regular season and both matches went into overtime. ODU defeated the Blue Devils 3-2 in double-overtime in Durham, and Duke returned the favor by topping the Monarchs 2-1 in overtime in Norfolk.
