WEST CHESTER, Pa. — In the first match of the season, four Golden Rams scored for defending national champion West Chester in its 5-1 victory against No. 5 Merrimack on Saturday.
West Chester controlled the middle of the field and applied constant pressure on the Warriors throughout the game. A pair of goals in the first half gave the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Senior Kayla Gluchowski scored the first goal of the year in the 16th minute off an assist from Kelsey Cheek. Three minutes later, Megan Callanan finished off a cross along the end line from Courtney Wolff to double the lead.
Michele Schrift and Kelsi Lykens each scored within the first three minutes of the second half to push the Golden Rams to a 4-0 advantage.
West Chester picked up another point in the 64th minute, before Merrimack averted the shutout by converting a 2-on-1 situation in the 66th minute.
The Golden Rams outshot the Warriors by a 33-8 margin. Merrimack goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist made 21 saves in the cage for the visitors. Kristin Arnold made three saves in goal for West Chester.
