No. 22 California falls short against Indiana in overtime shootout
Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana won 2-1 against No. 22 California on Saturday after outmatching the Golden Bears 6-5 in a game-deciding shootout.
Indiana was first to strike, as Morgan Fleetwood gave Indiana its lead in the 11th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the 2012 campaign on a penalty corner from Audra Heilman and Danielle McNally.
The Hoosiers (5-1) and Bears (2-4) were evenly matched throughout the contest in both shots (16-15) and penalty corners (6-8).
Fleetwood led Indiana’s offensive attack with seven shots and a goal, while Heilman and McNally earned assists.
The Hoosiers’ backfield held the Bears to one goal in the contest. Goalkeeper Maggie Olson (1-1) provided a solid effort between the posts, making six saves on the day.
After the first 35 minutes remained scoreless and regulation play began winding down, the visitors pulled goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson in the 64th minute. Henderson returned after Caroline Strujik tied the game at one in the 67th minute.
After two scoreless overtime sessions, both teams lined up for a shootout.
California converted on its first attempt to take a 1-0 lead, but Nicole Volgraf matched her opponent and found the back of the net.
In Indiana’s final attempt it needed a goal to tie at three and continue into a sudden death shootout. Brigitta Haller came through for the Hoosiers, getting a shot past California’s goalkeeper.
Indiana converted on its next four tries to defeat the Bears 6-5 in the shootout and earn a 2-1 win.
