NORFOLK, Va. – No. 10 Old Dominion defeated No. 18 Drexel 4-2 on Sunday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
The loss for Drexel (10-4) is its first in league play this year as Old Dominion (10-3) now stands as the only undefeated team in CAA action. The Lady Monarchs have won seven consecutive games.
Senior forward Kimberly Oakes scored a pair of goals to power the ODU offense. Oakes scored at the 10-minute mark on a pass from senior Maartje van Rijswijk. One minute later, van Rijswijk recorded a goal as she put it past Drexel goalkeeper Jantien Gunter.
The Dragons cut the lead in half when Lindsay McArdle shot from the left side past senior goalkeeper Marla Petriello into the right corner of the cage.
Christy Longacre scored the third goal for the Lady Monarchs in the 21st minute when she got a rebound and fired into the cage.
In the 30th minute, Elise DiDonato scored on a pass from Amanda Fleischut to cut the lead back to one goal but seconds before the halftime buzzer, Oakes was able to tip in her second goal of the game off a penalty corner to make it 4-2.
ODU held a 20-10 advantage in shots and had eight penalty corners to Drexel’s four. Gunter had nine saves for Drexel while Petriello had one for Old Dominion.
