GVSU Routs Tiffin, 71-10

No. 1 ranked Grand Valley State claimed a 71-10 road victory over Tiffin Saturday (Oct. 2) in GLIAC action. The Lakers improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC action, while Tiffin falls to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in GLIAC action. GVSU will host Northern Michigan in its annual homecoming tilt next Saturday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. GVSU hit the 70-point mark for the first time since a 77-12 win over Wayne State in 2001.
Ten different Lakers scored touchdowns, including six TDs by the Laker reserves. Senior WR Ryan Bass hauled in a 9 yard TD pass from senior QB Kyle McMahon just 1:05 into the game as GVSU scored 28 first quarter points. Tiffin's Mike Rutkowski kicked a 30 yard field goal on the Dragons first possession, but it took GVSU just 43 seconds to move 48 yards as sophomore RB Norman Shuford scored on an 18 yard run. Senior RB Justin Sherrod added a 1 yard TD run and junior WR Greg Gay hauled in a 23 yard TD pass from McMahon for the final score of the first quarter.
"Our starting unit came out played solid football in the opening quarter and enabled us to get our reserves in early," said first-year head coach Matt Mitchell.
Redshirt freshman QB Heath Parling saw his first action as a collegiate player in the first quarter and scored his first touchdown on a 3 yard run in the second quarter to give GVSU a 34-3 lead. The Laker reserves played the entire second half and scored 37 points. Junior TE Andrew Lorman caught an 11 yard pass from Parling at the 12:57 mark of the third quarter, followed by a 29 yard fumble return for a TD by defensive lineman Hunter Charneski. Tiffin scored its only TD in the third quarter, but Parling hit WR Cameron Bradford with a 1 yard TD pass after a 68 yard kickoff return by redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Kaufman. PK Jay Jandasek hit 26 yard field goal, followed by a 58 yard TD run by redshirt freshman Billy Seiler and a 9 yard TD run from Michael Ratay.
Billy Seiler ran for 110 yards and one TD on just four carries, while Michael Ratay added 79 yards on six carries. Shuford chipped in 78 yards on four carries and Sherrod toted the ball seven times for 64 yards. GVSU notched 382 rushing yards on just 29 carries for a school-record 13.2 yards per carry average. McMahon completed 7-of-10 passes for 94 yards and two TDs, while Parling completed 7-of-9 passes for 134 yards and two TDs. GVSU recorded 610 yards of total offense as a team. Junior TE Tony Carreri caught three passes for 52 yards and senior WR Carlos Clard hauled in two passes for 56 yards. Sophomore WR Chris Crawford returned two punts 69 yards, including a lone of 50 yards.
Defensively, senior LB Justin Victor led the way with eight tackles, while redshirt freshman Charles Hill added eight stops. Senior CB Rob Carlisle and senior safety Matt Bakker each picked off passes for the Laker defense. The stat of the day was time of possession, where Tiffin possessed the ball for 38:07 to GVSU's 21:53.
