DENTON, Texas (AP) – North Texas has fired coach Todd Dodge after 3 1/2 unsuccessful seasons and replaced him with the team’s offensive coordinator.
Athletic director Rick Villarreal said Wednesday that Dodge was let go after a 1-6 start that left him with a record of 6-37.
Villarreal chose offensive coordinator Mike Canales to be interim head coach for the rest of the season.
Dodge was hired before the 2007 season after going 79-1 in his final five years at nearby Southlake Carroll High School. It was a rare move: The last upper-division college program to hire a head coach straight out of high school was Notre Dame in 1981.
