STEVENS POINT – Two lost fumbles and an interception, along with 10 penalties, eventually doomed the Pointers, as they fell 26-21 to the Knights of Wartburg in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs at Community Stadium.

Wartburg (9-2) struck first, as Justin Vetter hauled in a 14 yard pass from Nick Yordi at 8:24 left in the first quarter to give the visitors the early lead, 7-0.

Wartburg added a 22-yard field goal with 8:27 remaining in the first half as the visitors capitalized on a Pointer fumble and take the two score lead.

The Pointers added a touchdown on a Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) run of 31 yards to get UWSP on the board, 10-7. Just before the half, the Knights struck again, as Vetter again hauled in a Yordi pass, this time from 11 yards out, to take a 17-7 lead into the halftime locker room.

In the second half, Mike Ferron (Racine) found the endzone on a three yard touchdown scamper to cut the Wartburg lead to three, 17-14 with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter. Wartburg answered right back, marching down the field on a six play, 40 yard drive and Spencer Herzber hit a 30-yard field goal to push the Knights’ lead to six, 20-14 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, Dan Bauder hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Yordi to give Wartburg the 26-14 edge and a failed two-point conversion left the score at 26.

The Pointers added a late touchdown, as Ferron again found the endzone, capping a 13 play, 68-yard drive to cut the deficit to five, but it was too late as the Knights’ offense was able to run out the clock and secure the win for Wartburg.

For Point, Jared Beckwith (Baraboo) finished the day going 18-for-32 for 144 yards and one interception. Jenkins caught 11 passes for 77 yards and also rushed for 44 yards on three carries including a touchdown.

For Wartburg, Yordi was 22-for-35 with 248 yards through the air and three touchdowns while Vetter caught 11 passes for 110 yards and two scores. Dan Bauder caught nine passes for 138 yards and the other touchdown for Wartburg.

UW-Stevens Point’s season ends at 9-2 overall. Wartburg improves to 9-2 advances to play Monmouth, 42-13 winners over Aurora, on Nov. 29.
