HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - Hampton University has fired football coach Jerry Holmes and promoted defensive coordinator Donovan Rose to replace him.

The Pirates finished the 2008 season 6-5, but lost four of their final five games.

Holmes became coach in December 2007 after serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for three seasons. He also coached defensive backs for five years in the NFL, at San Diego, Washington and Cleveland.

Rose retired from pro football in 1988. He played in the NFL for Kansas City and Miami and for Winnipeg in the Canadian Football League.
