Syracuse Field To Be Named After Ernie Davis
Oct. 1, 2009
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -Syracuse University is naming the field in the Carrier Dome "Ernie Davis Legends Field."
The university will make a formal dedication at halftime during Syracuse's football game against West Virginia on Oct. 10. The tribute to the 1961 Heisman Trophy winner comes a year after the release of a movie about his life called "The Express."
Davis, the first black player to win college football's highest honor, died of leukemia before playing a game in the NFL.
