Rhode Island Shocks No. 3 Villanova

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team (4-5; 3-3 CAA) defeated the defending national champion Villanova Wildcats 17-14 Saturday afternoon at Meade Stadium.
Quarterback Steve Probst led the way offensively with 208 total yards of offense (107 passing; 101 rushing).
Rhody opened the scoring in the first quarter as senior cornerback Jarrod Williams picked off Villanova's Chris Whitney and returned the interception 33 yards to the endzone. Williams' interception was his third this season and his eight career pick.
Neither team was able to find the endzone in the second quarter as the Rams shutout the Wildcats in the first half. Villanova scoreless first half was the first time this season it had been shutout in the opening 30 minutes.
Rhody outgained the Wildcats 116-112 and held Villanova to just 48 yards rushing.
Villanova tied the game seven as it scored on its opening possession of the first half. The Wildcats converted three third downs. Senior Angelo Babbaro rushed in from three yards out, which capped a 15 play, 74 yard drive, which spanned 6:59.
URI reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter thanks to a 19-yard field goal by kicker Louis Feinstein. After a three and out, Rhody took a two score lead after Willie McGinnis blocked the punt. He then pick the ball up and returned into the endzone to give the Rams a 17-7 lead.
Villanova would not quit as it cut the lead to three points at 17-14. Whitney found wide receiver Norman White in the back corner of the endzone. The Wildcats had got one last chance as they got the ball on their own 36-yard line, but were unable to come away with any points.
The Rams return to action next week as they head to Richmond to take the Spiders. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
