Shepherd Runs Past Kutztown, 41-34, Into DII Quarterfinals

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Junior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, MD/Quince Orchard rushed 25 times for 172 yards and a touchdown and junior running back Nate Hoyte (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) added 15 carries for 55 yards and a pair of scores to lead #18 Shepherd University to 41-34 win over #13 Kutztown in NCAA II football action at University Field on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead with 6:23 left in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run by Hoyte to cap a 19-play, 94-yard drive. The extra point attempt by junior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) went wide left.
Senior quarterback Kevin Clancy (Westminster, MD/Westminster) scored on a nine -yard scamper with 7:51 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 13-0 lead. The score was set up by a fumble recovery by senior defensive end Bryan Letourneau (Damascus, MD/Damascus) that was forced by sophomore free safety Corey Washington (Alexandria, VA/Edison).
Kutztown answered back when Kevin Morton teamed with Josh Smith on a 10-yard scoring strike with 3:08 left in the half. Matt Dineen added the extra point to cut the lead to 13-7.
Kutztown took advantage of a Shepherd turnover to take a 14-13 lead when Morton teamed with Erik Frazier on a 16-yard scoring pass with 4:08 left in the third quarter.
Shepherd took a 19-14 lead when Hoyte scored on a one-yard leap with 10:13 left in the fourth quarter. The two-point pass attempt failed.
Kutztown took a 20-19 lead when Morton and Smith teamed on a 14-yard scoring strike with 8:01 left. Freshman defensive lineman Robert Hayes (Sterling, VA/Park View) batted down the Kutztown two-point attempt.
Jay McKnight picked off a Clancy pass and rambled 50 yards for a touchdown to up the Golden Bears lead to 27-19 with 6:49 left .
Sophomore Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown with 6:31 left. Clancy teamed with senior tight end Dominique Jones (San Diego, CA/Horizon/Liberty) on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 27-27.
Shepherd took a 34-27 lead with 6:16 lead with 6:16 remaining on a 32-yard interception return by junior outside linebacker Maurice Perry (Dumfries, VA/Gar-Field).
Addison broke through the Kutztown defense, stumbled, and regained his balance and raced 72 yards for a score with 1:50 left in the game to give the Rams a 41-27 advantage.
Morton connected on an eight-yard scoring pass to Troy Foster with 12 seconds remaining for the games final score.
Clancy completed 16-of-29 passes for a 173 yards, while Morton connected on 31-of-50 passes for 352 yards and four scores.
Both teams put up some impressive numbers as Shepherd amassed 416 yards of total offense, while Kutztown had 413.
Junior wide receiver Robert Byrd (Alexandria, VA/Troy) had six catches for 81 yards to lead the Ram receiving corps. Smith had eight receptions for 88 yards for the Golden Bears.
Robinson had a game-high 11 tackles (all solo) to lead the Shepherd defense. Alex Dinolfi had eight tackles to pace Kutztown.
Shepherd improves to 11-1, while Kutztown completes its season at 10-2. The Rams advance to face Mercyhurst next Saturday.
Notes: Shepherd ties the single season mark for wins (11) set by the 2005 and 2006 squads. Robinsons 97-yard kickoff return was the second longest in program history.
