Roundup: No. 2 Delta State upset by Northwestern State
STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- In a game they probably had no business winning, No. 4 Abilene Christian walked out of Memorial Stadium with a stunning 27-24 win against Tarleton State.
With eight seconds remaining, Tarleton State drove all the way to the ACU 5-yard line. The Texans chose to go for the win and quarterback Nick Stephens' pass was intercepted by ACU's Nate Bailey as time expired.
The win is the Wildcats' fourth consecutive season-opening win.
Northwestern State 24, No. 2 Delta State 23
NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Junior college transfer quarterback Brad Henderson caught fire, completing a school-record 13 consecutive passes to spark a second-half rally as Nothwestern State was able to overcome a 17-point deficit to beat power Delta State 24-23 Thursday night at Turpin Stadium.
Henderson replaced starter Paul Harris and guided the Demons (1-0) back from a 17-0 halftime deficit with 24 unanswered points, scoring on four of their first five possessions of the second half. No. 2 Delta State (1-1), last year’s Division II runner-up, missed a chance to win the game with 10 seconds left on a failed two-point conversion pass. Full story
No. 3 Northwest Missouri State 65, Truman State 3
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - A bit of mystery swirled around Northwest Missouri State when it cruised into Stokes Field Thursday evening.
The Bearcats brought a new head coach, a new starting quarterback and nine new starters on defense.
In addition, the numerous red hats worn by Northwest fans to pay tribute to former head coach Scott Bostwick was a reminder of his tragic heart attack that took his life and prevented him from leading the Bearcats.
The Northwest players delivered the best tribute of all with an impressive 65-3 victory against Truman in Adam Dorrel's head coaching debut.
No. 6 North Alabama 31, Central Oklahoma 10
FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama won its ninth consecutive season-opener with a 31-10 decision against Central Oklahoma at Braly Stadium Thursday night.
Despite turning the ball over five times, the Lions gained 418 total yards and got a stellar performance from senior running back Antwan Ivey who picked up 142 yards on 10 carries and scored three times.
UNA led 14-3 at the half and added 17 second half points. Central Oklahoma’s only touchdown came after a muffed UNA punt return at its own 17 that the Bronchos quickly converted into a 17-yard TD pass.
No. 9 Bloomsburg 27, Ashland 20
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Franklyn Quiteh rushed for 144 yards and scored one touchdown to lead No. 9 Bloomsburg to a 27-20 win against Ashland on Thursday in the season opener for both teams. Quiteh now ranks ninth on the Huskies all-time rushing list with 2,159 yards.
The Huskies got off to a fast start as they drove 89 yards on 12 plays for a touchdown score. Quiteh led the way for the Huskies on the drive rushing for 31 yards. Two rushes for 14 yards by Quiteh set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Pat Carey to a wide open Kyle Fisher.
