Matt Evans was the Buck Buchanan Award winner as national defensive player of year in 2011 after he led the nation with 7.7 solo tackles per game and ranked second in the country with 165 total tackles, the second-most in New Hampshire single-season history. Evans made at least 10 tackles in 10 of UNH's 12 games last season. He will look to become only the second player to win the Buchanan Award a second time.

Jeremy Kimbrough bounced back from an injury-riddled 2010 season to be one of the nation's top linebackers last season for the Mountaineers.  He ranked fifth in the SoCon with 105 tackles, eighth with 12 tackles for loss and tied for 11th with four sacks, making him one of only two players to finish among the league’s top 11 in all three categories.

Brent Russell was named the 2011 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year after leading the squad with 16.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Russell is considered one of the top interior defensive lineman in the nation, and made a tackle for loss in the final four games of the season for the Eagles.

Darnell Taylor has started all 34 games for Sam Houston the last three seasons and is ranked 10th in Bearkat history with 236 career tackles. Taylor led the Bearkat defense with 128 tackles -- the highest single-season total since 1988 -- and was named the Southland Defensive Player of the Year.
