Frazzetta's 64 paces Wildcats
Top-ranked Chico St. leads after first round of Coyote Classic
LAKE ARROWHEAD – Chico State men’s golfer Eric Frazzetta quickly heated up the course after a one-and-a-half hour frost delay, firing a 6-under par 64 at Lake Arrowhead Country Club to lead the top-ranked Wildcats to the front of the pack following the first round of the Coyote Classic on Monday.
The Wildcats, ranked atop the Golfstat and Nike/Golf World Division II rankings, lead seventh-ranked Central Oklahoma by one stroke and ninth-ranked Sonoma State by 11 in their first tournament of the spring.
Frazzetta holds a two-stroke lead on Cal State San Bernardino’s Kevin Bateman. Frazzetta’s teammate, Kyle Souza, carded a 67 and finished the round in third. Cody Thompson is 2-over par, Matt Williams 5-over, and Ricky Owaki 10-over following the first round. Thompson is in 19th place, Williams 34th, and Owaki 76th in the 89-player field.
Chico State got its 2010-11 campaign off to a very good start in the fall, claiming the Western Washington University Invitational and Division II Championship Preview titles, and placing second at the Saint Martin’s Invitational and InterWest Wildcat Classic. The Wildcats have now finished among the top five in 16 straight tournaments dating back to the beginning of the 2009-10 campaign, including four wins, five seconds, and four thirds. They finished third at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
