UMKC captures Summit League title

Kangaroos finish 10 shots ahead of second-place Southern Utah

PRIMM, Nev. – After finishing second the last three years, the UMKC men captured its first Summit League Men’s Golf Championship.

The Kangaroos finished with a team score of 860 (303-280-277), four under par, and finishing 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Southern Utah. The `Roos third round score of 277 was a school record for single-round play.

The Kangaroos earn The Summit League’s automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals which take place May 19-21, while the Golden Eagles will participate in the 2011 NCAA Women’s Regionals from May 5-7. Announcement of the NCAA Men’s Regional fields and pairings is slated for May 9 at 5 p.m. (CDT), while the NCAA Women’s Regional fields and pairings is scheduled for May 2 at 2 p.m. (CDT).

 IUPUI’s Michael Powell claimed Championship MVP honors after firing a three-round 208 (72-69-67). UMKC’s Will Robson (209) and Viktor Mikaelsson (214), South Dakota State’s Nolan Meyer (214) and Southern Utah’s Jeff Evans (215) rounded out the top five and all-tournament team. Cole Chelle of UMKC shot a 219 (77-72-70) to earn Newcomer of the Championship honors, while Kangaroo head coach J.W. VanDenBorn earned his first career Coach of the Year award.
