LU wins second consecutive tourney
Pyne earns low medalist honors, leads Flyers to victory
LEMONT, Ill. – Lewis continued their hot play on Tuesday afternoon as the host Flyers maintained their nine-shot lead and won the Intercollegiate at Cog Hill, at Cog Hill's Dubsdread Course.
Lewis senior Casey Pyne earned medalist honors for the Flyers as he won the tournament by 11 strokes with a three-round score of 222 (78-72-72). It is Pyne’s second-career tournament championship as the Bloomington, Ill. native won the 2010 Shootout at Aguila.
“Casey flourishes when the conditions are tough and he showed it again today with his second-straight 72 to blow away the field,” Lewis head coach Skip Steffey said.
Lewis shot a team score of 959 (327-313-319) and won by 24 strokes over second place McKendree University. The Lewis “B” team finished in seventh place after a 1013 (343-331-339).
"The men's team finished a good spring with their second-consecutive win in relatively tough conditions," Steffey added. "I hope the team can carry the momentum into the Super Regional."
Sophomore Brandon White finished in fourth place and earned All-Tournament honors after a 240 (82-77-81). Senior Logan Watts shot a 247 (80-83-84) and tied for 10th.
Junior Nick Quagliano finished the tournament with a 252 (87-81-84) and in 19th place while sophomore Mark Bermele rounded out the top five for Lewis with a 253 (87-84-82) and tied for 20th.
On the Lewis “B” team, freshmen Kyle Mulcahy and Thomas Hearden led the way with a 253 and tied for 20th place. Mulcahy fired an 86-82-85 while Hearden carded an 89-80-84.
Freshman Alex Fried ended in 27 place after a 258 (89-84-85) while freshman E.J. Luna tied for 28th after 259 (83-85-91).
Freshman Dan Petrarca rounded out the top five for Lewis “B” with a 262 (85-92-85) and in 31st place.
Playing as an individual, junior Maxwell Capouch shot a 263 (88-86-89).
