IOWA CITY, Iowa -- New coach, same tradition.

Shaving 19 strokes off its third-round score, Central College delivered first-year coach Chad Green his first Iowa Conference championship Saturday, and a record 29th crown for the Dutch program. It’s the school’s third in a row and fourth in the past five years.

The title also secures a 30th NCAA Division III tournament berth as Central will head to the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. on May 10-13.

Senior Jason Harvey fired an even-par 72 at the Finkbine Golf Course to edge teammate Justin Livingston by two shots for medalist honors. Harvey carded a 78-71-79-72—300 and took league MVP honors to gain all-conference recognition a second time, having placed ninth in 2009. He narrowly missed all-league status a year ago, when he tied for 11th.

Livingston shot 76-73-77-76—302. Brent Messmore tied for 11th at 80-75-84-78—315 followed by Drew Osier in a tie for 18th at 80-75-84-82—321 and Alex Huyser tied for 31st at 86-73-88-81—329.

Central closed at 313-289-326-307—1235, outdistancing Dubuque (320-317-318-304—1259), Loras (319-305-320-317—1261) and Luther (324-303-316-319—1262).

Green was tabbed the league’s coach of the year.

“Our course management was a lot better today,” Green said. “We knew where we had to miss and got up and down a lot better.

“We had a better frame of mind. We knew we had to put up a good socre to win and we did that. It was good to get a nice round under our belt before we go to the national tournament.”

Harvey played smart golf, Green said.

“He putted very well,” he said. “On a couple of putts he was not in the best situation but he made them. That was the big difference between him and the rest of the field. He wasn’t striking the ball exceptionally well, but he grinded out a good round on a tough golf course. He was certainly deserving of the victory.”

Green has juggled the lineup throughout the season but said he won’t make any switches before journeying to North Carolina.

“This group won us a conference tournament,” he said. “This is the group that will go to the national tournament.”
