Lewis wins GLVC championship
Northern Kentucky second in rain-shortened tournament
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Lewis won the 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship on Tuesday after the second day of the tournament at Panther Creek Country Club was rained out.
The Flyers won the tournament by seven shots over second-place Northern Kentucky.
“It’s awesome to set your number one goal at the start of the year to win conference and then accomplish it,” head coach Skip Steffey said. “It was a great team victory and I’m proud of what they’ve done all year.”
Lewis’ 584 score is the lowest in GLVC history for a 36-hole championship. The previous low performance was Lewis’ 1986-87 score of 594.
Wisconsin-Parkside's Andrew Troyanek earned medalist honors with a 3-under 141. Troyanek opened the event with a 68 and finished his final round with a one-over 73.
Senior Casey Pyne led Lewis with a 142 (71-71). Pyne tied with Andrew Funk from Drury for second overall among the 70 entrants. Senior Logan Watts finished tied for fourth thanks to a 143 (69-74). Both earn All-GLVC honors.
“A championship and being named All-GLVC is a great way for Casey and Logan to finish at Lewis,” Steffey said.
The victory is Lewis' sixth GLVC Championship and first since 2003.
Lewis also earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Men's Midwest/South Central Regional. The tournament will be held at Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky. on May 2-4.
“We’re excited to go to Cherry Blossom and compete for a chance at Nationals,” Steffey said. “All you can ask for is a chance and we’re excited about the opportunity.”
Lewis now leads the GLVC All-Sports Trophy standings. The Flyers have won GLVC Championships in men’s golf, women’s volleyball, women’s indoor track and field and women’s basketball this season.
