LOS ANGELES – Texas freshman Jordan Spieth and UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay have received sponsor exemptions in the PGA TOUR’s Northern Trust Open this weekend at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Speith is the top-ranked collegiate player in the United States in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, while Cantlay is ranked 19th.
Both players have past PGA Tour event experience. Cantlay tied for 20th at the AT&T National in July with scores of 70-69-71-67 — 277 (-3). He tied for 24th at the Travelers Championship in June with scores of 67-60-70-72 — 269 (-11). His second-round 60 (-10) was the lowest round by an amateur in a PGA Tour event.
Cantlay earned low-amateur honors at the U.S. Open with scores of 75-67-70-72–284 (E), tying for 21st place.
Spieth finished T-16th and T-32nd in 2010 and 2011, respectively, at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. He missed the cut at the 2010 FedEx St. Jude Classic, his only other start on the PGA Tour.
Their appearances will mark an NCAA preview of sorts, as the NCAA championship will be held May 29-June 3 at Riviera.
