No. 21 Linfield wins Lutes Invitational
Wildcats’ Fitch claims individual title by one stroke
DUPONT, Wash. -- Alex Fitch fought off teammate Tyler Klopp to take top honors and help No. 21 Linfield bring home the team title at the Lutes Invitational.
Linfield shot 307 on Sunday and 607 for the tournament to win the eight-team event by 13 strokes. Host Pacific Lutheran was the runner up.
North Idaho College and Whitworth shared third place at 625. Puget Sound was fifth (631), followed by Willamette (642), George Fox (659) and Pacific (684).
Building a four-stroke cushion in the middle holes of Sunday’s second round, Fitch had to dig deep on the final two holes to capture medalist honors by one stroke. After carding a tournament-best 72 on Saturday Fitch recorded a 76, despite a double bogey on the 17th hole and a bogey on No. 18. He posted a 148 total for the tournament.
Klopp, who shot 77 over the final 18 holes, tied for second place with Whitworth’s Jesse Salzwedel, both with five-over-par 149s.
Linfield’s A.J. Taylor shared fifth place at 154, shooting a 77 both days. Taylor Pirnke earned a portion of eighth place at 156. Connor Magnuson shot 160 for the tournament to finish in a tie for 17th.
