MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Seventh-ranked Oglethorpe chased down No. 3 Methodist in the final round of the Wynlakes Wynter Nationals on Tuesday afternoon to start its spring slate off with a huge victory.
Considering the stout eight-team field included seven teams ranked in the latest GCAA Coaches’ poll, the win should go a long way towards securing the Petrels 13th consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship in May.
Trailing the Monarchs by one stroke on the final hole, sophomore Anthony Amodeo drilled a 12-foot birdie putt to pull the Petrels even with Methodist.
With not enough daylight to complete a playoff, the Petrels scored the big win based on their Monday performance from their No. 5 golfer.
All five Petrel starters in the event placed among the top 20 individually with Hayden Jones leading the way with a third-place finish.
Both Amodeo and Anthony Maccaglia tied for fifth overall while Eric Quinn earned a T15th-place result. Matt Rebitch rounded out the strong Petrel performance by finishing in 18th place.
