Bentley’s Michel snags hole-in-one
Rising senior gets ace in first round of New England Amateur
FALMOUTH, Maine – Bentley rising senior Matt Michel used his eight iron to ace the 151-yard 16th hole Tuesday with the hole-in-one helping him to conclude the opening day of play in the 83rd New England Amateur in a seven-way tie for 10th place.
Playing at the Falmouth Country Club, Michel had an outstanding back nine en route to an even-par 71. In addition to the ace, he had birdies on both the 372-yard par-four 13th and the 532-yard par-five 17th. Despite a double-bogey on the 18th, he was two-under for the final nine after playing the front side in two over.
Michel, Bentley’s No. 1 golfer last season with a stroke average of 75.5, is one of three current or future Falcons competing in the 148-player tournament. Dan McQueen, who reached the Round of 16 in last week’s Massachusetts State Amateur, struggled to an 81 despite two late birdies. Incoming freshman Kenyon Hunt finished with an 84.
