Grand Valley St. wins East Region
Fourth consecutive regional title comes via nine-shot victory
BELLE VERNON, Pa. - Grand Valley State completed its four-peat on Tuesday, as the Lakers captured the 2011 Super Region One Championship, marking the fourth consecutive year the team has won the regional title.
GVSU won the championship over host school California (Pa.), defeating the Vulcans by nine strokes for the sixth regional title in school history. The Lakers advance to the Division II Women's Golf Championships at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich. on May 11-14.
GVSU's final score of 957 (+93) was nine shots better than California (PA), as the Vulcans shot 966 (+102). Third-place Ashland (967, +103) also advances to the national tournament in Allendale next week, as the top three teams and top three individuals not from those teams move on to national competition. Drury (969, +105) and Ferris State (987, +123) rounded out the top five schools.
The Lakers tallied the lowest score (321) in round one on Sunday, the second-lowest total (316) in the second round on Monday, and the third-lowest score (320) in Tuesday's final round. Three GVSU golfers placed in the top-10 and four were in the top-25 to help earn the sixth championship in school history and third under head coach Rebecca Mailloux.
Leading the way for Grand Valley State was senior Allie Tyler, who tied for third place with Drury's Katrina Choate. Tyler shot a 234 (+18) with rounds of 76-80-78 to lead the GVSU contingent inside the top 10. In her final regional tournament, she was just three strokes back of second-place Dianne Luke (232, +16) of California (PA) and five strokes behind Ashland's Erin Misheff, the tournament medalist with a 229 (+13).
