McCormick to lead East Stroudsburg
Coach to helm both women’s golf and women’s tennis teams
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Al McCormick, the head coach of East Stroudsburg's tennis programs for the last eight years, has been appointed head coach of the Warriors’ golf program beginning this fall.
McCormick, a 1977 graduate of ESU, helped lead the men’s tennis team to three consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles from 1975-77 during his playing career and took over as head coach of both the men and women's tennis programs prior to the 2003 fall season. He has earned PSAC Coach of the Year awards in both sports.
He will continue as women’s tennis head coach for his ninth season in 2011-12 and takes over the women’s golf program, which will be in its fourth season of competition this year. His son, Dustin McCormick, was head coach for the first three seasons. The men’s tennis program has been discontinued as a varsity sport, university officials announced last month.
McCormick, an avid golfer, has taught lessons, assisted with junior tournaments and also ran tournaments for East Stroudsburg and the Pocono Medical Center throughout his professional career.
He has played in qualifiers for the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships and was ranked among the top 25 amateur golfers in Pennsylvania in the late 1980’s. He has also played qualifiers for senior tournaments, won numerous member-guest events, has held club championships at Pocono Manor and Glenbrook and also won the Highland Open, one of the area’s longest-running tournaments.
