Grand Valley State Posts Low Score At Super Regional One Opening Round

Grand Valley State's Kristina Langton fired an even-par 72 to tie California (Pa.)'s Simone DeSouza for low score in the opening round of the NCAA D-II Super Regional One, at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Penn, while three of Langton's teammates finished in the top-7 on the day to send the Lakers to a first-round lead.
Langton and DeSouza were followed by GVSU's trio of Caitlin Bennett, who shot a 3-over 75 to take third, Allie Tyler, who shot a 4-over 76 to take fourth and Ashley Smith, whose 5-over 77 was good for seventh.
The Lakers finished with a cumulative 12-over 300 to out-pace hosts Cal (Pa.) by 11 strokes. The Vulcans, who finished at 23-over, hold a nine-stroke lead over Indianapolis and Ferris State, both tied for third at 32-over.
The second round begins at 9:30 a.m. ET on Monday.
Florida Southern Takes Big Lead After Day One At Super Regional Two
Florida Southern holds a seven stroke lead after the opening round of the NCAA Division II Super Regional Two. The second-ranked Lady Mocs card a 304 (+14) during a hot, humid first day at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. They are led by senior Heather Burgner. She shoots the low round of the day with a 70 (-2) on the El Campeon Course.
Top ranked Nova Southeastern is in 2nd place with a 309 (+21), followed by Belmont Abbey at +22. Defending national champion Rollins College is in fourth at +31. The nine-team field includes five of the top six ranked teams in the latest NGCA national rankings. The top three schools following Tuesday's final round will advance to the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship in Findlay, Ohio May 13-16.
Newberry College's Maria Luz Besio, a freshman competing as an individual, is the only other player in red figures after an opening round 71 (-1). The top three finishers not on a qualifying team will also advance to the national championship.
The NCAA Division II Super Regional Two is co-hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and the Central Florida Sports Commission. Second round tee times begin at 8:00 a.m. Monday. Full results can be found on ncaa.com.
