GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Led by a 3-under, 67 from Emilie Burger, No. 10 Georgia fired a 6-over 286 in the opening round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Friday. Burger grabbed the individual lead, while the Bulldogs are second and two shots off the pace.
Burger turned at 1-under after a single birdie at No. 4 and moved to 3-under with additional birdies at No. 11 and No. 14. She gave a stroke back with her lone bogey at No. 16 but quickly recovered with a birdie at No. 17.
The Bulldogs also got a 72 from Rocio Sanchez Lobato, a 73 from Marta Silva Zamora and a 74 from Milena Savich, while discarding Collins Bradshaw’s 77. Tess Fordham, who is competing individually, also shot 77.
Burger is a stroke ahead of Florida’s Camilla Hedberg and Florida State’s Maria Salinas on the individual leaderboard. Sanchez Lobato is tied for 13th, Silva Zamora is tied for 18th, Savich is tied for 28th and Bradshaw and Fordham are both tied for 51st.
No. 2 Alabama shot 284 to earn the first-round lead. Trailing the Bulldogs and rounding out the top-10 teams are Florida State at 290, Kentucky at 291, No. 4 Auburn at 293, South Florida and No. 23 Florida are tied at 294, No. 11 Duke at 295, Arkansas at 297 and Baylor and Chattanooga are tied at 302.
