PINEHURST, N.C. — Brittany Marchand stormed back with a 4-under par 68 to make up a three-shot deficit and claim her second win in the last three events as No. 21 NC State blew away the field by 17 strokes at the Pinehurst Spring Challenge on the 5,983 yard, par 72 Pinehurst No. 6 course on Tuesday.
Marchand’s 68 ties for the second-best round in program history, and represents her career-low. The medalist honor gives Marchand three for her career, extending her lead as State’s all-time winningest golfer, and makes her the first women’s golfer in school history to win two tournaments in a single season. The 5-under 211 falls one shot shy of her career-low, a 210 fired earlier this year.
Marchand outlasted teammate Vivian Tsui, who carded a final round 73 to finish tied for second on her career-low 3-under par 213. The runner-up finish also marks the best of Tsui’s career. The freshman led by two shots entering the final round.
After setting a school record with a first round 67, Ana Menendez finished tied for 10th with her final round 77, totaling a 3-over par 219. Augusta James carded a final round 78 to drop to 22nd. Lindsay McGetrick, playing in the Pack lineup for the first time in her collegiate career, finished the tournament tied for 28th with her 76 on Tuesday.
NC State ties the program record for most wins in a season with three after taking the Pinehurst Spring Challenge with a 1-over par 865, seven shots off of the best 54-hole score in team history. The Wolfpack’s final round 294 stretched the final margin of victory to 17 shots against second-place finisher Maryland.
