MORTON, Minn. — No. 18 Augustana (S.D.) won the Northern Sun Championship for the third consecutive season. Behind medalist Maggie Leland, the Vikings fired a final-round score of 313 Sunday at the Dacotah Ridge Golf Course to win the three-round conference tournament with a 926.
Augustana entered the final round of the tournament, which kicked off with 36 holes this past fall, with a 40-stroke lead. The Vikings extended it to 54 strokes by the end of Sunday, bettering Concordia’s (Minn.) 980.
Saturday’s scheduled third round was canceled due to severe weather.
Peggy Kirby’s team was dominant, taking positions at first, second and third on the individual leader board. Leland won the tournament by five strokes, coming in at 7-over-par 222 after shooting a 3-over 74 on Sunday. Allie Ostrander finished second with a 12-over-par 227, and Emily Kvidera took third after carding a 19-over 234. Ostrander and Kvidera both turned in 79s in the last round.
Leland, Ostrander and Kvidera each collected all-tournament team honors. Leland and Kvidera are repeat honorees.
Jennifer Benoy placed 13th (33-over 248). She shot a 10-over 81 on Sunday. Kelsey Bortnem, who did not compete in the first two rounds in the fall, registered an 85.
Leland is the second NSIC Championship medalist and fourth overall conference medalist in school history. Kvidera won the NSIC in 2009-10, while Carley Roach and Courtney Belanger won the North Central Conference in 2005-06 and 2006-07, respectively.
The conference title is the fourth for Kirby and the program. In addition to the past three NSIC crowns, the Vikings were the NCC champions in 2007-08.
