SHELBYVILLE, Ky. — No. 2 Nova Southeastern got off to a great start at the 2012 NCAA Championships, posting a team score of +20 308 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course to lead the 12-team tournament after the first round of play.
The Sharks jostled positions with the top-half of the field throughout the opening round, but strong finishes from No. 1 Abbey Gittings and No. 2 Daniela Ortiz propelled NSU to the top of the leaderboard after the first 18 holes of action.
Gittings finished the opening round as the lone student-athlete to break even (72), scoring two birdies and three pars to close out her first 18 holes.
Ortiz had a similarly strong finish to her first round, closing out the final five holes with a birdie, three pars and one bogey to take a +1 73 into the clubhouse.
No. 3 Liliana Cammisa , coming off victories at the Sunshine State championship and the NCAA Super Regional No. 2, completed her first round tied for fifth at +4 (76). Cammisa recorded ten pars and two birdies during the round.
Senior Claudia Wolf tallied a +15 (87) in the first round to give the Sharks a team score of 308, six strokes ahead of Florida Southern, the top-ranked team in the nation. No. 9 Central Oklahoma stands in third with a first round score of +34 (322).
