Ben Newman captured the gold metal in the pommel horse and a bronze medal in the parallel bars at the 17th Maccabiah Games.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., -- Former Illini gymnast Ben Newman added two more accomplishments to his illustrious career yesterday. The Denver, Colo native took home the gold medal on the pommel horse as well as a bronze medal on the parallel bars at the 17th Maccabiah Games held in Israel. Newman was chosen to represent the United States of America at the international competition as a team captain.

Ben Newman was a tri-captain of the No. 3 ranked 2004-05 squad. The Academic All-Big Ten gymnast was a three-time Big Ten Pommel Horse Champion and garnered All-American (Pommel Horse) honors in 2004. Newman received a bachelor's degree in finance this past May.

An estimated 7,000 athletes from 55 countries will be participating in the two week long Olympic-style competition held in the State of Israel every four years. The opening ceremony of the Maccabiah Games took place on July 11 at the Ramat Gan Stadium.
