PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Robert Morris broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of goals 1:11 apart early in the third period to lift the Colonials to a stunning upset of top-ranked Miami, 3-1, Friday night at Mellon Arena in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase. Brooks Ostergard made 39 saves in goal as RMU earned just its fourth win in 19 games this season.

Robert Morris (4-12-3) struck first with a shorthanded goal with just 20 seconds left in the first period. Chris Kushneriuk stole the puck in neutral ice and made a break for the net. He faked a shot, then slid the puck past a diving Cody Reichard for a 1-0 Colonial lead. The RedHawks had dominated the first-period, outshooting Robert Morris 11-6.

Miami, which fell to 13-3-5 after having a four-game winning streak snapped, evened the score early in the second period on 5-on-3 power play. Andy Miele set up the situation when he rushed in against four defenders and nearly tied the game right then. But as his backhanded shot hit the cross, he was hooked, creating a two-man advantage a few seconds later. Just nine seconds after a Miami penalty expired, Carter Camper tipped in a Chris Wideman attempt from the circle. Tommy Wingels was also credited with an assist on the play.

Robert Morris seized control of the game with a pair of goals just 1:11 apart early in the third. J.C. Velasquez went top shelf over Riechard after a perfect 2-on-1 centering pass from Nick Chiavetta at the 5:02 mark to put the Colonials ahead, then Stefan Salituro tipped in a rebound right in the crease on a delayed penalty for a 3-1 advantage.

The two teams wrap up the home-and-home series with a 4:05 game Sunday afternoon in Oxford.
