GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) stopped 33 shots for his sixth shutout as No. 3 Denver blanked No. 4 North Dakota, 2-0, tonight in WCHA action before a sellout crowd of 11,728 at Engelstad Arena.
Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) netted the game-winner and Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood) also scored as Denver improves to 15-6-4, 11-4-4 WCHA. North Dakota falls to 13-9-5, 8-8-3.
Colborne put DU on the scoreboard 83 seconds into the game when he banged home a rebound after a shot by Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) and a rebound attempt by Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.). Ruegsegger’s unassisted blast from the right circle gave DU a 2-0 lead at 3:18 of the first period.
DU killed off a 5-on-3 UND advantage for 1:37 during the second period as Cheverie stopped all 15 UND shots. Brad Eidsness replaced Aaron Dell after the freshman allowed two goals on 11 shots in the first period.
A delayed penalty nullified a Fighting Sioux goal 2:33 into the third period and tempers flared moments later. UND pulled Eidsness (9 saves) for the final 2:21 of the game, but didn’t solve Cheverie. The Fighting Sioux had a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 1:40 of the contest, but Cheverie robbed Jason Gregoire’s blast from the right circle with one minute left to preserve his 10th career shutout and second against North Dakota this season.
North Dakota outshot DU, 33-20, but DU’s penalty kill led by Cheverie stopped all nine UND power-play attempts. DU was 0-for-5 on the man-advantage.
Notes: DU is first in the WCHA with 26 points. Cheverie ranks first in the nation in shutouts. The Pioneers are 1-3-1 in their last five games at North Dakota. The Pioneers are tied for first with Miami in the latest PairWise Rankings. Colborne has 4-6=10 during his seven-game point streak, while Ruegsegger has a two-game goal streak.
