Ian Boots’ goal with 1:39 remaining lifted the second-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team to a thrilling 5-3 win over visiting fourth-ranked Plattsburgh Saturday night in Oswego. The Lakers erupted for three goals in the third period, including two in the final two minutes, on the way to their fourth straight win over rival Plattsburgh. The win boosts the Lakers to 4-0 in conference and 6-0 overall, while the loss drops the Cardinals to 2-2-0 overall and in the SUNYAC.
Oswego State gave the sellout crowd something to get excited about as it got on the board early. Just past the halfway point in the first period, Luke Moodie corralled a loose puck off the stick of Matt Singleton outside the left circle and rifled a slap shot into the top right shelf past the glove hand of Plattsburgh netminder Josh Leis. The Lakers added their second score of the game at the 14:03 mark when Stephen Mallaro fired a shot that ricocheted off the boards and came right back to the stick of Andrew Mather in front of the net, who put it past a sprawled out Leis for the 2-0 lead. Justin Fox was also credited with an assist on the play.
Six minutes later, Plattsburgh pulled the goalie and added a sixth man on a delayed Oswego penalty. Patrick Jobb took the puck at the blue line and fed it to a cutting Cody Adams at the right circle who dealt a one-time pass to Nick Jensen, who knocked it home above Oswego State goaltender Paul Beckwith’s glove side. On the ensuing power play, Kyle Kudroch knotted the game at two at the 17:12 mark when he took a pass at the right faceoff circle, beating Beckwith on the glove side just inside the left pipe. Ryan Corry and Paul Puglisi were credited with assists on the goal.
After a seesaw, scoreless second period the scoring picked up once again 7:59 into the third period when the Lakers scored their third goal of the game as Singleton fed Tyler Leimbrock at the right circle, who sniped a shot into the top near corner of the net. Just over a minute later Plattsburgh responded with a rebound power-play goal by Dylan Clarke. Eric Satim and Mike Grace assisted on the marker. With less than two minutes remaining, Oswego State knocked home the eventual game-winner when Boots evaded Leis sending the puck into the center of the net sending the Campus Center crowd into a frenzy. Fox and Chris Laganiere registered feeds on the score.
After the Oswego State goal at the 18:21 mark of the third period, Plattsburgh called a timeout and pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. However, they could not muster a shot attempt and Owen Kelly stole the puck at mid-ice and finished the empty-net insurance goal with 1.5 seconds left.
Beckwith made 22 saves in net for the Lakers, who outshot their opponents 41-25, and Leis stopped 36 shots for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh went 2-for-6 with the extra attacker while Oswego State was just 1-for-4.
Oswego State will host Cortland Friday in the Campus Center Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
