UMass-Dartmouth Blanks Stonehill
Nov. 20, 2008
NEW BEDFORD, MAIt didn’t take junior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons/UMass Lowell) long to pick up where he left off.
Dryjowicz-Burek, who earned copious honors as a freshman at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, spent the last two seasons at UMass Lowell and then transferred back, earned a shutout in his second start this season as the Corsairs blanked visiting Stonehill, 2-0, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Wednesday evening.
Dryjowicz-Burek was at his best during the first period, when the Skyhawks out shot UMass Dartmouth, 11-4. After the first intermission, the Corsairs turned things around, taking the first 13 shots of the second period and scoring on their 21st shot of the period against Skyhawk goaltender Mike Manna. Senior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) broke the scoreless tie when he re-directed home a pass from junior forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) from the edge of the crease at 17:08 of the second period. Senior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) drew the other assist. UMass Dartmouth put the game away when freshman forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) took a pass from sophomore defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) and fired a shot from the Stonehill blue line into an empty net at 19:12 of the third period.
“It was good to see big number 32 (Dryjowicz-Burek) get the shutout,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We wanted to do all we could to protect the lead. We’re going to have a lot of low-scoring, tight-checking games like this, and we probably played our best period of the year in the third period, from the standpoint of our play in the defensive zone, cycling the puck in their zone, and creating chances.”
The Corsairs outshot the Skyhawks, 36-27. Dryjowicz-Burek made 27 saves for the Corsairs, while Manna stopped 34 shots for Stonehill. UMass Dartmouth did not score on any of their three power play opportunities, and killed all five Skyhawk chances with a man advantage.
The Corsairs improved to 3-1-0 and 3-0-0 in ECAC Northeast play with the victory, while the Skyhawks dropped to 0-2-0 and 0-2-0 in league play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Saturday evening. Stonehill will visit Nichols Saturday.
