St. Cloud State Win Streak Stopped At Two By Sioux

Grand Forks, N.D. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team saw its two-game WCHA win streak snapped on Friday, Dec. 12, with a hard-fought 3-2 loss at North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. The loss dropped the Huskies to 10-7-0, 5-6-0 WCHA) while North Dakota improved to 8-8-1, 5-5-1 WCHA.
North Dakota gained a 1-0 lead in the first period with an even-strength goal by Ryan Martens at 5:04. The lone assist on the play was provided Darcy Zajac, who connected with Martens on the goal.
The Huskies evened the score at 1-1 with freshman forward Jared Festler's (Little Falls) sixth goal of the season. He broke the UND shutout at 12:40 of the first period on an angle shot from the boards that snuck through the leg pads of UND netminder Brad Eidsness. Festler took the assist pass from freshman defender Sam Zabkowicz (Greendale, Wis.) and freshman forward Jordy Christian (Moorhead) and worked his way past center ice before unloading his scoring shot from the far side of the left circle.
North Dakota's Martens broke the tie in the third period with his second goal of the evening at 5:25. Once again, Zajac provided the solo assist on the play for UND.
Mario Lamoureux gave UND a 3-1 lead in the game at 12:25 of the third period. Assists on the play were carded by Brett Hextall and Brad Malone. Of note, the Huskies switched goalies after the goal as sophomore Dan Dunn (Oshawa, Ontario) replaced SCSU starter Jase Weslosky (St. Albert, Alberta).
The Huskies cut the lead to one with one second left in the contest, as Zabkowicz scored his first collegiate goal at 19:59. He was assisted on the extra-attacked goal by junior defender Garrett Raboin (Detroit Lakes) and sophomore forward Nick Oslund (Savage).
