MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (13-9-3, 8-5-2 WCHA) beat out conference rival Colorado College (12-8-5, 8-7-2 WCHA) with a
6-1 victory this Friday at the Kohl Center to climb within one point of first place in WCHA standings.
Wisconsin posted the first score in the first period, though Colorado College followed suit and tied up the game less than five minutes later.
However, the Badgers went on to score five more goals—two in the second period and three in the third—while CC failed to find the net again. With the win, the Badgers consecutively upped their WCHA win streak to six games and snapped a six-game losing streak to Colorado College.
Juniors John Mitchell (Neenah, Wis.) and Andy Bohmbach (Hudson, Wis.) both recorded three points to aid the Badgers in their 6-1 win. Mitchell gave two assists and scored one goal, while Bohmbach recorded to goals and gave one assist.
Mitchell scored the first goal of the game 6:35 into the first period.
He and junior Aaron Bendickson (Thief River Falls, Minn.) forced a turnover in the CC zone. After gaining possession, Mitchell skated in close to the CC net where he maneuvered it past CC goalkeeper Richard Bachman for the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers responded with 9:41 left in the first period. Prosser snapped a wrist shot through the legs of UW defenders, deflecting past senior Shane Connelly (Cheltenham, Pa.) to tie the game at 1-1. Brian Connelly and Stephen Schultz recorded the assists on the power-play goal.
Senior Tom Gorowsky (Lino Lakes, Minn.) opened the second period with a goal to regain the lead that the Badgers would hold throughout the rest of regulation. Sophomore Cody Goloubef (Oakville, Ontario) sent a slapshot into a scuffle in the front of the CC net, where Gorowsky punched it into the net for the 2-1 lead. Mitchell recorded an assist on the play.
Bendickson made it 3-1 with 17.3 seconds left in the second period.
Bendickson stuffed the puck past Bachman after an initial shot by junior Ben Grotting (Birmingham, Ala.) for his second goal of the season and first season goal in front of the home crowd.
Junior Andy Bohmbach (Hudson, Wis.) increased UW’s lead to three with a wrap-around goal 2:27 into the third period. Sophomore Ryan McDonagh (Arden Hills, Minn.) and Derek Stepan recorded the assists on the power-play goal.
Junior Michael Davies (St. Louis) scored the fifth Badger goal with
8:31 left in the game, shooting into the open corner over CC goalkeeper Drew O’Connell’s shoulder from near the CC goalpost for the 5-1 lead.
Bohmbach scored a second goal with 54 seconds left to play to seal off scoring at 6-1. Bohmbach and junior captain Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood,
Tenn.) teamed up on a rush to find the net. Geoffrion passed the puck across the ice to a wide-open Bohmbach, who scored from the near edge of the faceoff circle.
Wisconsin went 1-for-7 on the power play while Colorado College went
1-for-6 with the man advantage. The Badgers outshot the Tigers 31-30.
Connelly saved 29 shots to Bachman’s 20 and O’Connell’s five.
