The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team clinched the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association’s regular-season championship with a 4-3 win over the College of St. Scholastica Saints Friday night at Wessman Arena.
Along with the NCHA title, the Yellowjackets (20-2-3 overall, 11-1-2 NCHA) wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Peters Cup tournament and will host Lake Forest in the quarterfinals next Friday and Saturday.
The loss drops the Saints (18-5-2, 9-4-1) and gives them the No. 3 seed. They will host either UW-River Falls or UW-Eau Claire next weekend.
After the game was tied 1-1 after one period and 2-2 after two, the Yellowjackets took their first lead of the game, 3-2, when Andrew MacKenzie put home the rebound after two scoring attempts by Eric Bausano 2:50 into the third period.
One minute later the Saints tied it up 3-3 as A.J. Tucker scored with assists from Rob Rodgers and Jeremy Dawes.
UWS scored the eventual game-winning goal and took a 4-3 lead at 10:55 when defenseman Jeff Herman took a drop pass from Tyler Fletcher and beat CSS goaltender Steve Bounds from the top of the left circle. Kevin Huck also assisted on Herman’s third goal of the year.
CSS called a time out and pulled its goalie with 1:10 remaining.
With the extra attacker, the Saints applied plenty of pressure, but Aaron Spotts and Tucker fanned on shots and Jeremy Dawes shot the puck over the net before UWS goalie Chad Beiswenger was able to cover up the puck with 25.6 seconds left.
UWS used its time out at the same time and then clinched the win by clearing the puck out of its zone as the clock expired.
Less than a minute after stopping UWS on a 2-on-1 breakaway attempt, CSS was successful on a 2-on-1 advantage and took a 1-0 lead 5:28 into the game as Jordan Chong wristed the puck over Yellowjacket goaltender Chad Beiswenger after taking a pass from Matt Stengl.
UWS tied it up at 9:19 with Chris Wilson’s power-play goal. Brian Bina did a nice job of keeping the puck in the zone at the blue line then found Wilson alone near the right of the CSS goal. Wilson paused for a bit, and took a couple of steps backward before ripping a wrist shot over CSS goalie Steve Bounds.
UWS killed off its only penalty of the opening period thanks mostly to a pair of sliding saves by Beiswenger.
After failing on one 5-on-3 power play early in the second period, the Yellowjackets cashed in on a second chance as Wilson tied the game up at 2-2 with his second goal of the game with 47 seconds on the clock.
Kent Detlefsen set up the goal with a pass to Logan Isley to the left of the goal. Isley then found Wilson on the right side of the net and the junior wristed the puck high into the net over CSS goalie Steve Bounds.
Ten seconds after serving a tripping penalty, Geiger gave the Saints a 2-1 lead at 2:42 of the second period when he scored with an assist from Joey Hughes.
The ‘Jackets had a chance to get even with a 5-on-3 power play for one minute, but Bounds came up with a couple of saves, including a nice low glove save on Detlefsen’s shot from the point.
‘JACKET JOTTINGS: Tonight's game was the hottest ticket in town. Lines formed for tickets at 2 p.m. and around 6:15 p.m. (45 minutes from game time) the stands were nearly full. For the game fans are lined up around the boards on both ends of the ice. This will easily be the largest crowd at Wessman Arena in a number of years with fans turned away twice prior to the game.
