DENVER - Junior Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta) scored two goals as No. 2 Denver defeated St. Cloud State, 5-3, tonight at Magness Arena. With the victory, Denver moves to 9-3-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the WCHA. St. Cloud State falls to 5-6-2, 4-4-1 WCHA.

The Pioneers were on top 4-1 after Martin's two goals in the second, but two quick Husky goals in the last three minutes of the period brought St. Cloud State within one goal. The turning point came in the third period when Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) came up with a huge save, leading to a Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) goal that sealed the Pioneer victory.

"At times we had poor execution and it almost cost us, but I'm happy that we were able to bring home a victory tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Martin had a great night and Cheverie was terrific when we needed him to be."

Freshman Chris Knowlton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored his first career goal, while Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tallied his team-leading eighth goal of the season and had an assist. Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) had two assists on the night.

Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia), 7-0 on the season, made 25 saves. DU outshot SCSU, 29-28, and went 0-for-5 on the power play. DU limited the Huskies to an 0-for-2 effort with the man-advantage.

The puck drops for game two of the series tomorrow at 7 p.m.
