No. 1 Oswego State tops Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The top-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team raced out to four-goal lead in the first period, and never looked back en route to an 8-1 victory against host Potsdam Friday night. The line of Chris Laganiere, Chris Muise, and Tyler Leimbrock accounted for three goals and six assists for the Lakers, who out-shot the Bears 46-31. Oswego State improved to 18-2-0 overall and 11-0-0 in the league standings. Potsdam fell to 5-13-1 overall and 3-8-0 in the conference.
The Lakers came out of the gates quickly as Paul Rodrigues netted an unassisted goal in the first minute followed by a Chris Muise goal at the 3:58 mark with assists going to Laganiere and Leimbrock. Oswego State extended its lead to three goals at 10:26 when Laganiere and Taylor Farris fed Leimbrock for the score. The Lakers scored their first power-play goal of the game with 5 seconds remaining in a Bear slashing penalty as Andrew Mather posted his fifth goal of the season. Muise and Hank Van Boxmeer earned assists on the play that gave Oswego State a 4-0 lead at intermission.
Potsdam got on the scoreboard midway through the second period after a power-play goal by Adam Place at the 9:42 mark. However, the Lakers pushed the margin back to four goals when Jon Whitelaw found Ian Boots for his 11th goal of the season before the end of the period.
Oswego State tacked on three more goals in the third period to cruise to the victory. Laganiere capitalized on a pass from Leimbrock and Muise in the second minute of the frame, while Boots added another power-play goal and Owen Kelly rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 14:49.
Laker goaltender Paul Beckwith finished with 30 saves on 31 shots, while Bear goalies Trevor O’Neill and Kevin McFarland combined for 38 saves.
