ST. PETER, Minn. — No. 5 Gustavus took down top-ranked St. Norbert on Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink by a final score of 2-1.
Behind the play of sophomore goaltender Patrick Sullivan, the Gusties held the defending national champion to just one goal on their way to their third victory of the season. Sullivan recorded 39 saves after facing 40 shots in his first start between the pipes.
With the win, Gustavus improves to 3-1-0 on the season, while St. Norbert suffers its first loss of the year and falls to 4-1-0.
Zach May scored in the first period at the 5:13 mark on assists from Jack Walsh and Brenden Baker. It was May’s second goal of the season, and put the Gusties on top 1-0.
St. Norbert’s Connor Bradshaw had the equalizer with 5:14 to play in the opening frame. A scoreless second period took the tie to the third and final period when Ryan Johnson buried a shot from the point with 5:36 remaining in regulation. Johnson’s goal proved to be the game-winner as the Gusties held off the Green Knights and sealed the 2-1 victory.
