Five players record goals for No. 8 Utica in upset against No. 2 Hobart
GENEVA, N.Y. -- No. 8 Utica used five different goal scorers to defeat No. 2 Hobart 5-3 on Saturday. Utica goalie Nick Therrien made a season-high 39 saves in the win.
Utica got on the board at 3:22 of the first period as junior Ridge Garbutt netted his seventh of the year. Freshman Donny Olivieri picked up his 12 assist on the score. Trever Hertz put in his seventh goal of the season, unassisted, at 14:45 to put UC up 2-0.
Hobart responded just three minutes later as Frank Salituro knocked in his 12th goal of the season. Bronson Kovacs and Ryan Michel assisted on the score. In the final minute of play in the first period, sophomore Peter LaFosse fired home his third goal of the seasons with assists from Hertz and Adam Graff.
After a scoreless second frame, Hobart cut the lead to one as Salituro netted his second of the night on the power play, assisted by Michel and Mac Olson. However, just 45 seconds later, senior Jon Gaffney again made it a two-goal game as he scored his tenth of the season. Garbutt added his 11th assist on Gaffney's shorthanded score.
Hobart again narrowed the Utica lead to one as Robert Sovik got in on the action, putting home his third goal on the year. Brad McBride and Ben Gamache added assists. Senior Rob Morton tacked on an insurance goal at 13:26, assisted by sophomore Mike Baird to seal the victory for the Pioneers.
Therrien improved to 12-2 on the year, while Hobart's Nick Broadwater stopped 18 shots in the loss.
The Statesmen drop to 14-2-2 and 6-1-1 in the ECAC West, while Utica improves to 14-3 and 5-2 in the conference.
