STORRS, Conn. – Connecticut advanced to the Atlantic Hockey semifinals for the second time in three seasons with a 4-3 win against Robert Morris on Saturday at the Freitas Ice Forum.. The win propelled the Huskies to 19-13-4 on the year, while the Colonials finish at 20-14-4.
The AHA championship will take place at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y., on March 22-23.
Despite outshooting RMU 10-2 in the first period, UConn found itself down 1-0 at the first intermission. Zach Hervato netted his 12th goal of the season, unassisted, midway through the frame.
Connecticut scored three consecutive goals in the second period, including the game-tying score just 1:36 into the stanza on goal by Cody Sharib out of a scrum in front of the net.
The Huskies took the lead at 12:27 as Sharib passed the puck from the right wing to freshman linemate Shawn Pauly for a shot from straight on and his seventh goal of the season. UConn quickly doubled its lead only 16 seconds later on an unassisted goal by Joey Ferriss. Ferriss beat the Robert Morris goaltender Eric Levine glove-side as he recorded a goal for the third consecutive game.
The Colonials reduced their deficit to one at the 14:48 mark on their second power play of the night. Hervato sent a pass from the right side to defenseman Andrew Blazek, who ripped a slap shot into the net from a stride inside the blue line.
UConn added what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 3:01 mark of the third as Trevor Gerling made a move at the top of the left faceoff circle and fired a shot into the back of the net.
With just under four minutes to play, RMU pulled the goalie and netted an extra-attacker goal just five seconds later when Cody Wydo got a rebound in front of the net and put it in to trim the deficit to one.
UConn goaltender Matt Grogan made 19 saves. Levine made 26 saves.
