Providence, Merrimack, Notre Dame, BC to play in Frozen Fenway 2014
BOSTON, Mass. -- The Hockey East Association, the City of Boston and Fenway Sports Management (FSM) announced on Thursday that Providence will participate in Frozen Fenway 2014. The Friars will play Merrimack on Saturday, Jan. 4 in a nonconference game at the historic home of the Boston Red Sox. The game will be the first of a doubleheader, with Notre Dame and Boston College playing in the second game.
"This is a great opportunity for our players, coaches, alumni and fans to take part in an event that will leave a lasting impression," athletics director Bob Driscoll said. "Watching the Friars play in such an historic venue will be special for all of the Providence College community."
It will mark the first outdoor game for the Friars and the second outdoor hockey game for the Providence athletics program at Fenway Park. The Friar women's hockey team played at Fenway Park on Jan. 10, 2012, falling to Dartmouth by the score of 3-2.
"The Providence College hockey program is honored to be taking part in what will be a special event at Fenway Park," head coach Nate Leaman said. "It will be a great experience for our players, fans and alumni and it is sure to be another highly competitive game against Merrimack."
With the addition of two Hockey East games, the outdoor game against the Warriors will be one of PC's three games versus Merrimack next season.
The Friars and Warriors played to a 1-1-1 series record in 2012-13, including Providence's 3-2 overtime win at Merrimack on Nov. 30. Senior forward Tim Schaller scored the game-winning goal with 37 second remaining in overtime to lift the Friars to their first overtime road win since Jan. 13, 2007.
Providence and Merrimack have met 117 times dating back to the teams' first meeting on Feb. 13, 1960, which the Friars won 7-1 at the Billerica Forum. The Friars lead the all-time series with a 78-30-9 record and are 3-2-1 against Merrimack under Head Coach Nate Leaman.
Game times and ticket information for the doubleheader will be announced in the coming months.
