PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Norwich women’s hockey team proved to be too much for Plattsburgh earlier tonight at the Stafford Ice Arena, as the Cadets defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. The loss drops the Cardinals to 10-2-1 overall. Norwich improves to 9-3-0.
At 14:52 of the first period, Norwich’s Sophie Leclerc scored her team-leading 12th goal, flipping the puck past Mandy Mackrell on a backhand. The Cadets took a 1-0 lead to the locker room after one period of play.
Teal Gove tied up the game with just 3:20 gone in the second period. Amber Welch was credited with an assist on the goal.
It would be all Norwich in the third as Melissa Rundlett notched the game-winner just 40 seconds into the period from Sophie Leclerc and Brittane Michaud. The Cadets added a power-play goal at the 11:00 mark from Renee Lortie.
Mackrell recorded 20 saves for Plattsburgh and suffered her second loss of the year. Norwich goaltender Cindy Fortin turned away 28 shots and improved to 7-1-0.
The Cardinals hit the road this weekend to face ECAC West opponent Buffalo State for a two game series beginning Saturday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m.
