MANKATO, Minn. – It took five goals, a five-minute overtime and nine rounds of a shootout, but the Ohio State women’s hockey team battled through it all to defeat Minnesota State by a score of 6-5 Saturday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. The 1-0 shootout win gave the Buckeyes all four points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. It was the first shootout for the Buckeyes after the WCHA Conference added it for the women’s league for the 2008-09 season.

After several solid saves by each goaltender in the shootout, the Buckeyes turned to sophomore forward Jenna Kilpatrick in the ninth round. In front of a local crowd, the native of New Prague, Minn., picked up the puck at the center faceoff dot and skated it down the center of the ice. She went to the right of the goalie and shot low glove where the puck snuck in and just over the goal line.

Buckeye goaltender Deidre Facklis made seven saves in the shootout with two MSU misses. The sophomore from Wilmette, Ill., finished her 65 minutes of play with 38 saves. Facklis is 1-2-1 this season.

In the back-and-forth game, the score was tied four times. The Buckeyes fought their way back from an early 2-goal deficit and held the lead three times, but the Mavericks were hard to shake and continued to even the score. With 8.5 seconds remaining in regulation, Minnesota State tied the score for the second time in the third period to send the game into a five-minute overtime.

Senior co-captain Hayley Klassen led OSU with four points (2g, 2a) and was one of five Buckeyes with multiple-points. Freshmen linemates Laura McIntosh and Natalie Spooner each had a goal and two assists. Sophomore defensemen Teal Bishop and Shannon Reilly both collected two assists.

Minnesota State scored twice in the first but Ohio State closed out the period with a power play goal to trail 2-1 heading into the first intermission. Christina Lee got the Mavericks on the board at 8:14 when she backhanded the puck in while stationed in front of the net with assists by Lisa Edman and Ida Clark.

Maggie Fisher doubled MSU’s lead at less than two minutes later when she jammed the puck in while skating across the goal crease. She was assisted by Ashley Young at 9:43.

With the period winding down, the Buckeyes took advantage of a power play opportunity to get on the board at 19:31. Spooner fired a shot from the slot and Klassen backhanded in the rebound from the left side. McIntosh tallied the second assist.

Ohio State opened the second period with two goals to take the lead. McIntosh quickly tied the game at 2-all when she rattled the puck in off the crossbar just 20 seconds into the stanza. Klassen and sophomore Bishop had the assists.

The Buckeyes then went up 3-2 with their second power play goal at 6:21. Reilly shot the puck from the top of the slot, deflected by Klassen over to Spooner who scored from the left side of the net.

Ohio State followed with a string of overlapping penalties and killed off two 5-on-3 opportunities during that span. Just seconds from returning to even strength, the Mavericks tallied a power play goal to tie the game once again at 14:21 when Emilia Andersson scored from the slot from Lee and Holly Snyder.

Klassen tallied her second goal of the game at 17:32 to return the lead to OSU heading into the second intermission. While skating 4-on-4, Bishop fired a shot on goal from the left faceoff circle and Klassen tucked in the rebound from the right side. Spooner picked up the second assist.

Minnesota State evened the game once again 6:12 into the third. Ariel Mackley tallied the goal during a scramble in front of the net with assists going to Liz Orke and Abby Williams.

The Buckeyes capitalized on another power play opportunity to regain the lead at 8:00. Off a pass from McIntosh, Reilly has a slap shot from the top of the left circle that went on net, and rookie forward Kim Theut scored off the rebound off a wrist shot from the right.

In the final minute of regulation, Ohio State was called for a penalty and Minnesota State pulled its goaltender for the 6-on-4 advantage. The strategy proved successful as Fisher scored her second goal of the game, set up by Snyder and Lee.

For the game, the Mavericks had a 43-25 advantage in shots, including a 20-10 margin in the third period. The Buckeyes had their best power play performance of the season with a 3-of-6 mark. MSU was 2-of-7 with the man-advantage.

Ohio State wraps up the first half of its season with an exhibition game against the U.S. Women’s Select Team Sunday in Blaine, Minn. The puck drops at 10 a.m. at the Schwan Super Rink and a live video broadcast is available with links on the women’s hockey schedule page on www.OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

The Buckeyes will faceoff against two former teammates – forward Erin Keys and defenseman Lisa Chesson – who are participating with the USA Hockey’s Residency Program during 2008-09. Both Chesson and Keys completed their Ohio State careers last season.
